Bring .vsdx diagrams into Camunda

Camunda models are BPMN 2.0 files. Convert the .vsdx file once, then open the result in Camunda Modeler on your desktop or upload it to Web Modeler.

1. Convert the .vsdx file

  1. Test the file without an account: you see the converted diagram, page by page, and a conversion report.
  2. If the result suits you, create an account and convert the file from your dashboard. The first account of an organisation, or of a personal mailbox, starts with 2 free conversions; see pricing.
  3. Check the result in the built-in editor, then download the .bpmn file.

A file with several pages counts as one conversion. All its pages are placed one under the other in a single diagram, so one import is meant to bring the whole file into Camunda. Check it on your first file.

2. Open the file in Camunda

Camunda Modeler (desktop)

Desktop Modeler works with files on your computer: open the downloaded .bpmn file from the application, and save it where your project keeps its models. Desktop Modeler documentation.

Web Modeler (Camunda 8)

  1. Open your process application.
  2. Choose New > Upload files, or drag the file into the process application.
  3. To replace a diagram that already exists, open it, open the menu next to its name and choose Replace via upload. Camunda’s documentation notes that this clears the undo history of that diagram.

3. Check the imported diagram

  • Compare it with the original, page by page.
  • Change the type of data objects, data stores and groups: they are converted as tasks.
  • Replace the lines between annotations and their elements with associations.
  • Look for connectors that were attached at one end only in the original: they are not converted.

The full list is on How it works.

We describe here what each tool’s documentation says. We have not published import tests for this tool yet, so try one file before you plan a whole migration.

Before a process can run

A drawing describes a process; it does not say how an engine should run it. The converted file contains no conditions on flows, no forms and no service settings. Add them in Camunda Modeler before you deploy.
